Our Meetings

Meeting 1
Topic: Dance Of Death
Date: 24.III.2004

After many weeks of hardship, our long-awaited society came into existence. The first meeting, which took place on March 24, 2004, gathered crowds of students eager to extend their knowledge of English literature. We were all honoured by the presence of Professor Irena Janicka-¦widerska, who delivered the inaugural lecture on dance macabre.

At first, Professor Janicka-¦widerska concentrated on the variety of presentations of death ranging from decayed corpses with the attribute of a shovel (15th century) to skeletons (16th century) later accompanied by scythes (17th century). We were filled with deep admiration by the woodcuts of Hans Holbein the Younger, which provided us with inspiration for our future researches.

Afterwards, Professor Janicka-¦widerska presented the English aspect of the dance of death motif, concentrating on its social background and representative examples. The lecture dealt with an interesting, warrior-like depiction of personified death, which may be found in the early morality plays "The Pride of Life" and "The Castle of Perseverance".

Finally, Professor Janicka-¦widerska proved undeniable links between dance macabre and Elizabethan secular drama. The lecture made us realize that one of the greatest plays of William Shakespeare - "Hamlet" is in fact full of references to the motif of the dance of death, which is visible both in the characteristic bone and worm imagery and the social aspect.

As a result, the lecture brought a wealth of invaluable experience to all the members of the society. The knowledge we have gained has formed the basis for our future researches and helped us to gain a broader view on Shakespearian drama. Therefore, we are anxiously waiting for our next meetings.
